MLB’s non-waiver trade deadline is July 31st. As the New York Yankees appear to be in playoff contention, every day this month we will take a look at a player who could be involved in the Yankees’ deadline activity. These players will either be current Yankees who could be traded away or players from other organizations who New York could look to acquire for the playoff push.

As we talked about yesterday, sometimes a change of scenery can do a player a lot of good. Something about a fresh start with new coaches and a new ballpark can turn a career around. The Yankees have a player who has bounced back and forth from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to the Bronx that could use a new beginning.

SP/RP Bryan Mitchell, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (AAA), Sell

Bryan Mitchell was 10th on Baseball America’s top ten Yankees prospects list just a year ago.

He’s now in High-A getting more work through the MLB All-Star break.

That’s quite a drop. That drop is, however, a bit exaggerated. Mitchell has been in Triple-A for most of the 2017 season. His High-A “demotion” is just to keep him active as the Tampa Yankees don’t stop for an All-Star break.

While with the RailRiders, Mitchell has gone 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA and 36-6 strikeout to walk ratio in nine starts.

Mitchell, however, started 2017 in the Bronx coming out of the Yankee bullpen. In 12 appearances, the right-hander was 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA and 10-7 strikeout to walk ratio.

Bryan Mitchell has fallen behind a handful of pitchers in the Yankee bullpen, including Jonathan Holder, Tyler Webb, and Ben Heller.

The 26-year-old also doesn’t seem to have much of a chance of starting in New York. Luis Cessa, Chance Adams, Domingo Acevedo, and Justus Sheffield are all likely ahead of Mitchell on the future depth chart.

Mitchell throws his fastball in the mid to upper-90s and has a curveball that could be an out pitch if he commands it better.

Another team could see the potential for a late-inning reliever and take a chance on Mitchell.

If paired up with the right pitching coach, Mitchell could have a career resurgence, similar to what Ivan Nova did once he was traded to Pittsburgh at last year’s trade deadline.

Like Rob Refsnyder, Mitchell won’t bring back any significant major league talent at the trade deadline by himself. However, he too can be marketed as a near major league-ready player and packaged with prospects.

A change of scenery could help Mitchell turn his career around. The Yankees could use some reinforcements for their playoff run. A trade deadline move could help both parties.

With today being the All-Star Game, tomorrow’s profile will be a 2017 All-Star who the Yankees could target at the trade deadline and potentially use Bryan Mitchell to acquire.
