MLB’s non-waiver trade deadline is July 31st. As the New York Yankees appear to be in playoff contention, every day this month we will take a look at a player who could be involved in the Yankees’ deadline activity. These players will either be current Yankees who could be traded away or players from other organizations who New York could look to acquire for the playoff push.

Today, we stay inside the Yankees’ organization and go back to the Trenton Thunder. After profiling one of the Thunder hitters yesterday, we take a look at one of Trenton’s top pitchers.

One of the oldest adages in baseball is that you can never have enough pitching.

This seems to prove true for most teams just about every year.

The Yankees have gotten more out of their starting pitching thus far than most expected coming into the 2017 season.

First-time All-Star Luis Severino has pitched like an ace. Rookie Jordan Montgomery has been one of New York’s most consistent starting pitchers. CC Sabathia, prior to his injury, looked like the CC that helped the Yankees win the 2009 World Series. And Michael Pineda had a string of starts from April 10 to May 28 that gave fans hope that he had finally turned a corner.

However, Masahiro Tanaka has not looked like the ace he was expected to be until recently. Pineda has gone back to being Pineda with his consistent inconsistency. CC, at 36-years-old, is a health concern. And Luis Severino and Jordan Montgomery have never pitched full MLB seasons.

These concerns are causing Yankee fans to question whether or not the team needs to go get a starting pitcher at the trade deadline.

If Brian Cashman determines that the team needs another starting pitcher, other ballclubs will likely want some young pitching in return.

That’s where Yefry Ramirez comes in.

Ramirez has been one of the more consistent pitchers for the Trenton Thunder this season.

The right-hander is 8-3 with a 3.75 ERA. He has also given up 3 ER or fewer in 10 of his 14 starts.

Ramirez is on the Yankees’ 40-man roster and has survived the recent roster shakeup, with players getting injured, called up, sent down, and designated for assignment seemingly every day.

New York must see something in this 23-year-old, considering that they don’t want to risk putting him on waivers.

This is Ramirez’s first season in Double-A, so he may still be a year or two away from the bigs.

Next: Yankees Daily Trade Deadline Profile: Tito Polo

Ramirez won’t net the Yanks a big league starter by himself. However, if packaged with Jorge Mateo, Tito Polo, and maybe another prospect or two, the Yankees might be able to get a decent starting pitcher in return at the trade deadline.

Who might the Yankees get for a Mateo-centered package with a few Double-A players mixed in?

Come back tomorrow as we profile such a candidate. Spoiler: We will look at another starting pitcher on Saturday who could also be had for a similar package.
