With the news that former Met Bartolo Colon was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves, the rumors began to circulate that New York would explore bringing Colon back to the Big Apple.

The 44-year-old Bartolo Colon’s 2017 campaign was a rough one in Atlanta. The right-hander had a 2-8 record and an ERA over eight.

While father time may finally be catching up with Big Sexy,”  he still would be a valuable addition to the Mets for the rest of the season.

With 2017 being the year of injuries for the Amazins, the team is in desperate need of pitching.

Enter Bartolo Colon, the definition of an innings eater.

Let’s not forget that he has also shined on the New York stage.

During his Mets career, Colon was 44-34, with a 3.90 ERA.

With all of the injuries in the starting rotation, Colon would be a welcomed addition as a starter every fifth day.

The Mets have, instead, been trying to get by with minor league starters, who have no business in the majors.

If the Mets are hesitant to bring in Colon as a starter, his value could also be in New York’s overworked bullpen.

Colon has proven that he can be a valuable reliever out of the bullpen. He proved this during the team’s 2015 playoff run.

“Big Sexy” has a $12.5 million contract this season, which is a pretty high salary. However, he’s on a one-year deal that would come off the books at the end of the season.

Colon’s ability to eat innings out of the bullpen would be huge. Being a guy that could throw multiple innings would help a bullpen that has been overtaxed all season.

The versatility that Colon would bring to the Mets pitching staff, whether it be in the starting rotation or bullpen, makes too much sense.

New York would be bringing back one of the team’s most popular players in recent years.

It’s time for the Mets to bring Big Sexy back.
