New York Mets starting pitcher Zack Wheeler has been sidelined since early last week due to biceps tendinitis. He is now ready to come off of the disabled list, and is scheduled to start this weekend.

The New York Mets have had so many injuries lately that it has been difficult to keep track of who is healthy and who is not.

Zack Wheeler had been able to avoid an injury for the entire season up until last week. Thankfully, Wheeler’s arm issue did not keep him out for that long.

Wheeler, 27, was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to biceps tendinitis back on June 21. The

right-hander had not looked like himself over his last two starts. He allowed eight earned runs in just 1.2 innings during his start against the Chicago Cubs on June 13.

It was the shortest outing of his career. Wheeler did not pitch that much better in his next start. He gave up seven earned runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers and lasted only two innings.

Before those two disastrous starts, Wheeler’s ERA was 3.45. It is now 5.29. The Mets decided to place him on the disabled list a few days after the game against the Dodgers. Even though Wheeler underwent an MRI that showed no damage to his arm, they decided to play it safe.

The team was reportedly worried about arm fatigue.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Wheeler threw a bullpen session on Thursday and did not have any problems. He is now scheduled to start on Saturday.

It seems as though Wheeler’s arm is now fine. The Mets were being cautious with him, which is probably a good idea considering he had missed the past two seasons due to his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Fortunately, Wheeler technically only missed one start. Had he been healthy, he probably would have pitched last Saturday when the Mets were on the road facing the San Francisco Giants.

The Mets are coming off a road trip in which they dropped the first four games to the Dodgers but then won five of the next six games against the Giants and Miami Marlins.

They now return home this weekend to take on the Phillies for a three-game series. After that, they will hit the road again right before the All-Star break and play the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals.

The Mets rotation will definitely get a boost when Wheeler returns this weekend. Hopefully, he can return to top form and pitch like he did before those last two bad starts.
