New York Yankees: Players with a Chance at the 2017 MLB All-Star Game
By Sean Dyer
SS Didi Gregorius
.313/.332/.486, 9 HR, 31 RBI, 1.4 WAR
Didi has done nothing but hit since returning from his early-season shoulder injury.
After missing the first month of the season, Gregorius has not yet qualified to rank amongst the American League’s slash line leaders. However, Didi should qualify to be one of the league leaders in the coming weeks.
If Didi had just a few more at-bats, Gregorius would have the second highest batting average and slugging percentage among AL shortstops.
He would also have the fourth-best OPS and he currently has the fifth most home runs and sixth most RBIs for AL shortstops.
Gregorius is having the best year of his career, however, we are in an age where baseball has a lot of talented young shortstops.
The Yankee shortstop trails Carlos Correa and Francisco Lindor in the fan vote, and Xander Bogaerts, Elvis Andrus, and Jean Segura are all having All-Star-caliber seasons.
Being an American League All-Star at shortstop is a challenging feat. If Didi Gregorius doesn’t get that honor this year, it won’t be for lack of trying.
