Luis Cessa

As previously mentioned, Cessa will be the first pitcher the Yankees use in Sabathia’s place.

Cessa made 17 appearances for the Yankees in 2016, including nine starts. On the year, Cessa was 4-4 with an ERA of 4.35 in 70.1 innings.

The righty was then part of the competition for a starting spot this spring but was the first pitcher to be eliminated from the race.

Cessa has been unimpressive in Triple-A through ten starts and one relief appearance. He is 3-6 with a 4.15 ERA and a 47-22 strikeout to walk ratio in 65 innings of work.

He has pitched better of late though, so we will see him pitch in Oakland this weekend.

This is Cessa’s second trip to the majors this season. Cessa made a relief appearance against Toronto in May.

That appearance resulted in Cessa giving up two runs in 3.1 innings and a demotion back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

If Cessa pitches well this weekend, he may continue to get starts for the Yanks. If he struggles, however, New York may need to look for other options.
