New York Mets: Injuries continue, Lagares breaks his thumb
The New York Mets have had more injury problems to deal with this week. Center fielder Juan Lagares is the latest player to go down.
The New York Mets just cannot catch a break when it comes to injuries.
During the fifth inning of the team’s game against the Washington Nationals on Thursday night, Juan Lagares attempted to make a diving catch on a ball blooped into shallow center field by Anthony Rendon.
He was unable to make the catch, and ended up breaking his thumb on the play. As reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Lagares wanted to stay in the game, but had to be taken out because of the injury.
Later in the game, it was revealed that Lagares had to depart because of a fractured IP joint in his left thumb. Mike Puma of the New York Post reported that this was the injury that Lagares had sustained.
This is not the first time that Lagares will have to miss time because of a thumb injury. Last season, he sprained his left thumb in June while trying to make a diving catch. He tried playing through it, but was eventually placed on the disabled list.

missed over six weeks. It is unclear whether or not the current thumb injury that Lagares has is as serious as the one he had last year.
It appeared as though the Mets were finally starting to get healthy again after Yoenis Cespedes, Steven Matz and Seth Lugo all returned last weekend.
However, a few more key players got hurt this week. Matt Harvey left his start against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night due to a tired arm.
After undergoing an MRI, it was revealed that he has a stress injury to the scapula bone in his right shoulder. He is expected to miss at least a few weeks.
On the same night that Harvey left his start, Mets second baseman Neil Walker strained his left hamstring while running down to first base. Later on, an MRI revealed that Walker has a partial tear in his left hamstring. According to Marc Craig of Newsday, both Harvey and Walker will miss several weeks.
On Thursday, the Mets placed Walker on the 10-day disabled list. Harvey was also placed on the DL. It appears as though Lagares is heading there as well.
Perhaps no team in the MLB has had worse luck with injuries over the past few years than the Mets. It seems like the team has a new problem to deal with every week. Hopefully, the Mets can battle through these injuries as they try and climb back to the .500 mark.
