New York Giants: John Mara discusses stance on Kaepernick
New York Giants co-owner John Mara gave his stance on the Colin Kaepernick situation, and is now receiving criticism for doing so.
New York Giants co-owner John Mara has been decently vocal about his stance on former 49er Colin Kaepernick.
Last season, Kaepernick received backlash for kneeling down during the national anthem.
Kaepernick’s protest was in response to police brutality against minorities, and blacks in particular. Many athletes in the NFL, and beyond, followed in Kaepernick’s footsteps and the protest gained national attention.
John Mara appeared on The MMQB and gave his stance on the Colin Kaepernick situation and Kaepernick’s protest. Mara said that he had received letters saying that fans were threatening to boycott the team if the Giants ever followed in Kaepernick’s lead in protest.
"“All my years being in the league, I never received more emotional mail from people than I did about that issue,” says Giants co-owner John Mara, who for 24 years has worked for the team his family founded. “If any of your players ever do that, we are never coming to another Giants game. It wasn’t one or two letters. It was a lot. It’s an emotional, emotional issue for a lot of people, more so than any other issue I’ve run into.”"
Mara also went on to say that the Giants had never discussed signing Kaepernick. They did however sign former Jet Geno Smith and drafted Davis Webb out of California.
Mara’s comments are receiving public criticism because of the movement Kaepernick’s protest started and how many people believed in what he was doing.
