The New York Yankees have an important stretch of games ahead. There is potential for them to break from the pack.

The New York Yankees have led the American League East for a majority of this young season, and they have a chance to widen that division lead over the next few weeks.

The 29-18 Bronx Bombers lead the second place Boston Red Sox by three games, the slumping Baltimore Orioles by 4.5 games and the surging Toronto Blue Jays by 7.5 games, and will play each team in consecutive series.

The Yankees begin this week in Baltimore to take on the 25-23 Orioles, who have lost seven straight games, their worst streak since 2011.

They were just swept by the Houston Astros this weekend, and have lost 13 of their last 16. Luckily, the Orioles play better at Camden Yards, but the Yankee offense appeared to get their mojo back with yesterday’s 9-5 win over the Oakland Athletics, which is something Baltimore certainly doesn’t want.

Camden Yards is a notoriously good hitters park, and if the Yankee bats get going, combined with the continued brilliance of their starting pitching staff, they should be able to take advantage of a struggling Baltimore team.

The only thing the Orioles have going for them is that they are due to play some solid baseball, and who better to start doing so then against the first place Yankees.

After their three-game stint in Baltimore, the Yankees will travel to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays, who are now 23-27 after a terrible start to the season.

Toronto has played much better after the return of Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitski to the lineup, which has bolstered their roster exponentially.

The Yankees never play well up at the Rogers Centre, and with those big bats back in the mix, escaping this four-game series with two wins would be a job well done.

The Yankees then return home to play the Boston Red Sox in the final three games of this tough stretch, and it could turn out to be a fun one if both teams remain in first and second place respectively.

More from New York Yankees

The Red Sox started off slow, but have now won five of their last six games and have vaulted themselves to a 27-22 record.

They’ve had great starting pitching from Chris Sale all season, while young guys like Eduardo Rodriguez have been a breathe of fresh air and have outperformed expectations.

The Yankees have passed every test they’ve had so far this season with flying colors, and this next one has huge division implications where every win is a big step towards winning the A.L. East in September.
