New York is set to have some great sporting events this summer. From horse racing to the NBA Draft, New York will be a sports Mecca in 2017.

New York get ready. It’s Memorial Day weekend and you know what that means?  It’s officially summer time up in here. So get the crew together, and enjoy the best sports events happening in the tri-state area for the next few months.

Now this list would be much, much, much better if the Rangers, Devils, Islanders, Knicks or Nets were still kicking around, but that my friends is what they call a long shot.  Of course you could and should attend a Mets or Yanks game this summer, but here is my personal list (in date order) of some more unique sporting events to attend or watch this summer in the NY area.

June 2nd – The first annual Landon Collins Charity Softball Game.  Hosted by the NY Giants All-Pro Safety and Giants Super-fan Joe “License Plate Guy” Ruback.  This event promises to be packed with current and ex-Giants.  Events include a Dodgeball game, Home Run Derby and Softball game.

June 10thThe Belmont Stakes. A virtual no-brainer event for any sports fan.  If the weather is good, this is a phenomenal day, if the weather is bad, this is still a pretty good day.

June 21stThe Steve Nash “Showdown in China Town”.  A major do for soccer fans especially. Each year Nash feeds his inner soccer beast with a charity soccer game in NYC.  Usually get a great mix of celebrities and athletes playing.

June 22ndThe NBA Draft at The Barclays Center.  Honestly, this is not for everyone.  I am kind of a draft nerd, so I like this event.  The atmosphere is always jumpin’ and because the Knicks pick 8th there will be energy in the air.  I’m sure you know this, but the Nets don’t have a 1st round pick, and they don’t have one next year either.

June 25th – Opening Night of Ice Cube’s 3 on 3 Basketball League.  The Barclays Center plays host to one of the most anticipated events of the summer: Old NBA players playing 3 on 3 hoops.  I for one will give this a chance.

July 20th (tentative) – The Roc Nation Summer Classic.  Not sure if this is actually happening this summer, but if it does go down, its kinda fun.   A ton of rappers, athletes and celebrities get together for a Charity Basketball Game, Dunk Contest and 3-Point Shoot Out.

August 24-27The Northern Trust Open.  Watching golf in Long Island in the summer is AMAZING.  The NTO brings out the big guns (Top 125) and it brings out the big purse ($8.75 mil). I absolutely suggest attending at least 1 day of this.  You don’t get too many chances to see the worlds top golfers.

August 26th and 27thTravers Weekend.  If you can get yourself together for a little road trip with the fellas, I highly suggest visiting the lovely town of Saratoga NY and stopping by the race track.  Travers is the big boy weekend, but between July 21st and August 27th its still an awesome experience.

August 28th- September 10thThe U.S. Open. The perfect bookend to your summer.  The best of the best tennis stars accessible for like 2 weeks.  Go with your kids and get the huge tennis ball for autographs, trust me they will love it.  Also, if you want to pack in the sports, you could always hit a Mets game at Citi field during the day and walk over to the tennis at night (seriously you can walk over).
