New York Mets: Paul Sewald has been a bright spot in an awful bullpen
By Nick Ziegler
The New York Mets have a big problem in their bullpen. However, one player has been performing well.
Coming into the 2017 season, the New York Mets had one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball. However, injuries have hurt their rotation and their bullpen quite a bit.
So far, the Mets have lost Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz, Seth Lugo, and Jeurys Familia to injuries this season. For any team, losing arguably their best starting pitcher and closer would be a recipe for disaster. At times, theses injuries have looked like too much to overcome for the Mets.
While the rotation for the Mets has been really poor, it has been the bullpen that has been even worse. With the loss of Familia, the pitchers have been asked to do more. Addison Reed is the new closer now, and he hasn’t been lights out by any means this season.
Trying to get the ball to Reed has also been a big issue for the Mets. Pitchers like Hansel Robles, Fernando Salas, and recently acquired Neil Ramirez are all being asked to do more, and they haven’t been able to get the job done.
Even with the bullpen struggling in general, one pitcher has shined recently. After a poor start to the season, Paul Sewald has come on and pitched very well for the Mets. In May, Sewald has totaled a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings, and he has also totaled 15 strikeouts. For the season, Sewald has a very respectable 2.70 ERA, which is the second-lowest ERA in the Mets bullpen behind Jerry Blevins.

With a need for some stability in the bullpen, Sewald could be a pitcher that the Mets turn to be their setup man for Reed. While Reed certainly needs to pitch better as the closer, getting to him will be an important thing for the Mets to figure out. Sewald offers the team a solid option as of now to get that done.
