New York Islanders 2016-17 Player Grades: Goalies
By Nick Ziegler
Jaroslav Halak
It was not an easy 2016-17 season for Jaroslav Halak. After two very solid seasons in New York, Halak had a hard time establishing his role with the Islanders last season. Due to the success of Greiss in the playoffs the year before, the Halak wasn’t given his starting job back completely.
During the season, the Islanders carrying three goalies ended up causing quite a bit of drama. Halak’s agent made it publicly known that he and Halak were not happy about practice time and that it was affecting him. Shortly after this, the Islanders tried to trade Halak. There were no takers on the trade market, and he eventually cleared waivers and was sent to the AHL.
In the 2016-17 season, Halak totaled 12-9-5 record, .915 save percentage, and 2.80 GAA. While his save percentage wasn’t bad, Halak allowed far too many goals per game. While in the AHL, Halak was a professional and played very well. His strong play in the AHL did end up paying off, as he was recalled in March.
When Halak did make his return to the Islanders, he performed quite well. In seven games, Halak was able to win six of them to help push the Islanders closer to the playoffs. The strong last month of the season certainly helped Halak’s grade improve overall.
