The New York Islanders surprisingly played with three goalies on their roster in the 2016-17 season. How did the three perform?

Coming into the 2016-17 season, the New York Islanders had hopes of reaching the playoffs for the third straight season. After defeating the Florida Panthers in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Islanders advanced to the second round for the first time since 1993 in the 2015-16 season.

Unfortunately, they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round. One of the big takeaways from the playoffs was the performance of Thomas Greiss. After Jaroslav Halak was injured toward the end of the season, the Islanders’ chances of succeeding in the postseason certainly went down.

However, Greiss was great for the Islanders in the playoffs, and he had some of the best performances of any goalie in the Islanders playoff history. Due to the success of Greiss, the Islanders had a strange situation heading into the season. With Halak still on the team, head coach Jack Capuano never really committed to a starter. In addition to those two, the Islanders also carried Jean-Francois Berube on the roster. Having three goalies made things difficult, and there was certainly some drama.

After a poor start to the season, the Islanders made some changes, as they fired Capuano, and also sent Halak down to the AHL. The Islanders would rebound from the slow start, but they still fell short of the playoffs.

With the season over for New York, here are the season grades for their three goalies.
