Number Five: The Flip

Arguably the most bizarre play for a shortstop to make… EVER… ranks number five in our countdown.

I could watch this play one million times, and not understand how or why Jeter ran from the shortstop position to pick up the overthrow.

Hell, he bare-hands the thing!

The throw from Shane Spencer misses the cutoff man, and it looks certain that Jeremy Giambi is going to score on the play. Then Jeter sprints from short stop to the first base line, and flips the ball to Jorge Posada.

They get Giambi out, and the momentum of the series completely shifts.

The Yanks trailed the series 2-0 and were facing elimination, but went on to win three straight games to take the series right out of the A’s hands.

Jeter easily could’ve looked on and watched as the A’s would’ve tied the game, but that wouldn’t be Derek Jeter.
