New York Giants: Why going after Blount doesn’t make sense

The New York Giants are apparently one of the contending teams going after LeGarrette Blount. Big Blue should think twice before signing the powerful veteran.

The New York Giants backfield is becoming a party, and it is not something to be excited about.

The Giants will have three running backs on the depth chart after drafting Wayne Gallman out of Clemson. The former Tiger will be very effective in the Giants scheme, but add a fourth back to the equation, and it limits production.

There is a murmur that the Giants are going after New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount, and that would be nothing short of a bonehead move.

Yes, Blount is one of the league’s best power backs, and yes, he could help develop the youth. The only problem is, youth can’t be developed if they don’t get touches in game-time situations.

Last season Paul Perkins struggled to get touches throughout the majority of the season because of the presence of Rashad Jennings. The Giants have since cut Jennings, but adding Blount will just put the backfield back into a cycle.

The biggest thing for the New York Giants front office is understanding the importance of developing Gallman and Perkins as a tandem.

This could be Thunder and Lightning round two in New York, but Blount is set to take away from it. Blount is a strong runner, but he isn’t someone that will benefit Big Blue.

The future is bright for the Giants run game, if Jerry Reese can stay smart and stay away from Blount. There is no immediate need for him, and he will just eat up roster space.

Not to mention he will also come with a decent price tag.

Bottom line is that the Giants can’t bring in Blount if they want the offensive youth to flourish.
