Safety Calvin Pryor

The writing’s on the wall for Pryor’s future with the team in more ways than one. The first two selections of the 2017 NFL Draft were more than enough reason to believe Pryor’s Jets tenure could be over soon. Then his 2018 option was not picked up, meaning he will be a free agent after this season.

Pryor has turned out to be a bust of a first round pick. He played well the first two seasons of his career, finishing with a Pro Football Focus grade of 77.5 and 77. But, in 2016, Pryor’s play fell off as he finished with a grade of 68.7, which put him 74th out of 90 qualifying safeties.

Part of the problem has been how the Jets use him. Pryor has done well against the run, finishing 29th out of 88 safeties last season. That doesn’t make up for his putrid play against the pass, where he was ranked 73rd out of 82 qualifying safeties.

The Jets should do their best to get Pryor more involved against the run closer to the line of scrimmage. There have been whispers possibly playing him at linebacker some in a hybrid role. Pryor will find it difficult to get on the field with Adams and Maye in the fold. He will have to improve in pass coverage or hope the Jets use him in a linebacker hybrid role. Either way, his Jets tenure looks like it will be short lived.
