The New York Giants had a very interesting 2017 NFL Draft. Now, we will review what they did that left some confused.

The New York Giants 2017 draft featured some picks that left fans scratching their head. The Giants entered the draft needing to upgrade their linebackers, tight ends and offensive line. After an unpredictable first round, the Giants were in a prime position to do so with the 23rd overall pick.

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected TE O.J. Howard, who some analysts believe the Giants should have traded up for, with the 19th overall pick the Giants lost the opportunity to draft a player that would immediately upgrade their offense. Instead of picking Alabama linebacker Rueben Foster, general manager Jerry Reese selected Evan Engram.

Engram, a TE from Ole Miss, is a great athlete who can stretch the field. His presence will prevent teams from playing cover 2 against the New York, something which proved to be the Giants kryptonite last season.

Some fans wanted Reese to trade back in the draft because they believed Engram would have been available later in the first round. A trade would have netted the Giants extra picks to possibly help their offensive line. However, if Engram can be the player to stretch the field the Giants so desperately need it won’t matter that Reese took him early.

With the Giants second round pick they selected their replacement for defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, who left in free agency earlier this offseason. New York selected Dalvin Tomlinson, a DT from Alabama. Tomlinson was a good college player who will fit in right next to Damon Harrison. This was a solid pick from Reese.

The Giants third round selection is the one that Giants fans will question for years to come. With their offensive line still needing help and the linebacking core still unable to cover anyone, Reese selected quarterback David Webb from California.

Though Eli Manning is quickly approaching the end of his career, the Giants are in win-now mode. Unless Reese is sure that Webb is the guy who will take over after Manning leaves, the pick was wasted. An OL or LB with this selection would drastically help New York in 2017.

With their fourth round selection the Giants drafted Clemson running back Wayne Gallman. Gallman has the ability to do a little bit of everything for New York and was a great pick. The only question moving forward is if the Giants will still pursue veteran LeGarette Blount in free agency?

Fifth round pick defensive end Avery Moss is a good fit for the Giants and they almost always bulk of their defensive line in the draft. The problem for Moss is his off the field history. Moss exposed himself to a student while at Nebraska and eventually had to transfer to Youngstown State.

The Giants last pick in the draft came in the sixth round when they finally addressed their OL. Big Blue traded up in the draft to take Adam Bisnowaty. Bisnowaty possess technique issues and has had problems with ankle injuries in the past. Although the pick has a good amount of upside it was way too late for Reese to address the line.

Overall, New York added quality players in the draft. Engram and Tomlinson will be starters on day one but it had opportunities to trade back and add picks. It also should have added an offensive linemen way earlier in the draft. For those reasons the New York Giants get a C+ for the 2017 NFL Draft.
