Fifth Round Pick: Damontae Kazee; Cornerback, San Diego State

At first glance, cornerback isn’t a pressing need for the Giants. They used their first round pick on Eli Apple last season and signed Janoris Jenkins last offseason. Those two were added to Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, giving the Giants an excellent top three at cornerback. But, as we saw in the postseason, depth is a problem.

The Giants need to add some potential future pieces at cornerback. Rodgers-Cromartie is entering the final year of his contract and depth is an issue. Kazee could help fill out the Giants depth chart at defensive back.

Kazee is slightly undersized at just under 5-feet-11 inches tall, but he was very productive at San Diego State. He was named the Mountain West Conference player of the year the past two seasons, intercepting 15 passes over that course of time. Kazee was also a team captain in 2016, something the Giants like to see as it shows leadership qualities.

His high football IQ and skills make up for his lack of size and athleticism. He is a tough player that does not back down from bigger receivers and is a sound tackler. He can also chip in on special teams as a punt returner.

Kazee plays bigger than his frame, which is a plus. He would be an excellent addition to the Giants roster as he can play in either zone or man-to-man schemes. The Giants need to address their depth issue at cornerback, making it a position they should target in the mid-late rounds of the draft.
