The New York Mets fell down ESPN’s MLB Power Rankings after a very poor week on the field.

The New York Mets are struggling mightily. The combination of poor play and injuries have derailed the Mets over the past 10 days.

The Mets are getting very little production from most of their starting lineup. Curtis Granderson and Jose Reyes are hitting .149 and .104 respectively. Juan Lagares has struggled since coming off the disabled list, hitting .111. Neil Walker has shown some signs recently of waking up, but is hitting only .206.

The only player the Mets have batting over .300 is Michael Conforto, who may not have a permanent spot in the lineup once the Mets get healthier. While the lineup has struggled, the starting rotation hasn’t been that great either.

The Mets are getting what they expected out of Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, and Matt Harvey. But, Zack Wheeler and Robert Gsellman have struggled mightily. Wheeler, in his return from missing the past two seasons, has a 5.40 ERA. His 1.11 WHIP suggests that things could turn around. Gsellman doesn’t have that look with a 5.09 ERA and 1.55 WHIP as he has gotten hit hard thus far.

While there has been a lot of negative the past week, one positive is getting Jeurys Familia back. Familia’s return can help get everyone back in their regular roles in the bullpen. That is good news, as the Mets bullpen has been taxed to start the season.

The Mets are dealing with a lot right now, and the losses are piling up. They were swept by the Washington Nationals over the weekend, which was part of the reason they dropped in ESPN’s MLB Power Rankings.

The Mets have fell out of the top-10, dropping all the way to 12th after being fourth last week. Here is what was said about the Mets spot in the rankings this week.

"The Mets are injury depleted and overworked at a level that’s usually the norm for them … in June or July. Without Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda, an offense reliant on home runs is inevitably going to struggle. In the bullpen, they already have four relievers — Addison Reed, Fernando Salas, Jerry Blevins and Hansel Robles — on pace to pitch at least 80 games. Quality reinforcements are needed. — Mark Simon, ESPN Stats & Information"

The Mets have lost eight of their last nine games. What makes that stretch even more difficult is that it was against all divisional teams; the Mets lost three of four in Miami and then two of three to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Mets need to figure out how to stay afloat until they get healthy. They cannot dig too deep a hole as the Nationals are playing well. Getting swept in the first series is not a good start, but something they will have to bounce back from.
