The New York Mets lost Yoenis Cespedes to a hamstring injury during Thursday night’s loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The New York Mets received a boost Thursday night against the Philadelphia Phillies. Closer Jeurys Familia was back in the bullpen, as his 15-game suspension was up. He threw a scoreless inning against the Phillies and should help settle down a Mets bullpen that has been taxed in the early going.

That scoreless inning was about the only positive thing to come out of Thursday night’s game. Other than that, it was a lost night for the Mets.

First off, they lost the game 6-4. The loss dropped their record at Citi Field to 4-5 on the season. They have lost back-to-back series at Citi Field, as this loss to the Phillies followed a series loss to the Miami Marlins.

More from New York Mets

Thursday night the defense let down Noah Syndergaard. Syndergaard was his dominant self, striking out 10 Phillies and walking none in seven innings. But, he surrendered five runs, three of which were earned. He needed 114 pitches to get through those seven innings; had the defense been better, he could have gone deeper in the game and gotten the Mets a victory.

While a loss is bad enough, things got worse when Yoenis Cespedes was forced from the game. Cespedes left the game in the sixth inning with what was originally thought to be a cramp in his left hamstring.

Cespedes’ timetable, before the MRI he is set to have Friday, is 2-3 days according to Mike Puma of Newsday.

The Mets are hoping that is all the time that Cespedes will miss. Manager Terry Collins said that he is concerned about Cespedes latest injury. He has battled hamstring ailments in the past, so the Mets should have a decent idea of how to combat it once they figure out exactly what it is from the MRI.

This injury comes at a poor time for the Mets as they are heading into their first series of the season against the Washington Nationals. In addition to Cespedes, the Mets have also lost Travis d’Arnaud and Lucas Duda this week to injury. Wilmer Flores is dealing with a joint infection as well, leaving the team dangerously shorthanded as they head into a very important series.

The Mets are surely hoping that all of the injuries that occurred this week are minor. It is still early in the season, but the Mets cannot afford to fall into an early hole.
