The New York Mets losing continued Friday night as they lost to the Washington Nationals at Citi Field.

The New York Mets struggles continued on Friday night against the Washington Nationals. The Mets are coming into the series shorthanded, as they placed Wilmer Flores and Lucas Duda on the disabled list prior to the game. Add in Yoenis Cespedes pending MRI for his hamstring and the Mets lineup is lacking a lot of punch.

That lack of punch was evident Friday as the Nationals outlasted the Mets in 11 innings. The Mets managed only three runs and seven hits in the game as their offense continues to lag behind their pitching staff.

The Mets got into an early hole as Bryce Harper continued his torrid start to the season tonight. Harper went yard in the first inning, giving the Nationals an early 2-0 lead and finally finding some success against Matt Harvey.

More from New York Mets

The Mets got one run back in the bottom of the first inning, as Michael Conforto led the game off with a solo home run. The Mets would even the game up in the fourth inning, as Curtis Granderson singled in Jay Bruce.

Granderson would tie the game for the Mets again in the sixth inning with a solo home run. That home run came an inning after Jose Lobaton hit a solo shot for the Nationals in the fifth inning.

That would be all the runs the starters surrendered. Harvey was strong for the Mets through seven innings, replacing Jacob deGrom who was scratched. Harvey allowed four hits and two walks that resulted in three runs scored. He struck out only two Nationals on the evening.

Tanner Roark had a good game for the Nationals as well. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three walks that resulted in three runs. He struck out five Mets. It then turned into a bullpen game, where the Nationals were able to take advantage.

In 4.1 innings, the Nationals bullpen allowed only two base runners; in four innings the Mets bullpen allowed five. Unfortunately for the Mets, four of them came in the decisive 11th inning.

Josh Smoker pitched the 10th inning but ran out of gas in the 11th. After getting Wilmer Difo out to begin the inning, he gave up a double to Harper. Daniel Murphy was intentionally walked after.

That would start a streak of three consecutive Nationals that were walked, as Jeurys Familia would walk Anthony Rendon and Trea Turner; Turner’s walk forced in the go-ahead and game-winning run.

The Mets record now drops below the .500 mark as they have lost six of their last seven games. They will look to get back into the win column tomorrow afternoon as deGrom will take the mound against Gio Gonzalez.
