ESPN recently released their predictions for whether or not teams will be drafting a quarterback in the upcoming draft. Will the New York Giants be using a pick on a signal caller?

After a very good 2016 season, the New York Giants are coming into the NFL Draft as a team that is win-now mode. With a lot of talent still on the team, the Giants are going to likely be back in the NFC Playoffs next season.

Even though they are in position for success in 2017, an organization always has to look toward the future. For the Giants, that means finding a successor for Eli Manning. It is a bit shocking to say, but Manning is already 36-years-old.

While quarterbacks are having success in their late-30s, the Giants have to be prepared for when the time comes for Manning to leave. This offseason, the Giants signed quarterback Geno Smith from the New York Jets. Even though Smith didn’t have a lot of success as a starter for the Jets, he still has a lot of potential.

In ESPN’s article, Jordan Raanan says that the Giants will likely be drafting a quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft. Here’s what Raanan had to say.

"Eli Manning is 36 years old, and the Giants haven’t been coy about their interest in finding his eventual replacement. They would be foolish not to at least be doing their due diligence. But picking 23rd and with a weak quarterback class, it’s unlikely they find an answer in the first two rounds unless either Mitchell Trubisky or Deshaun Watson suffers an unlikely tumble. The most likely scenario is the Giants grab a quarterback in the middle rounds, someone such as Pittsburgh’s Nathan Peterman, Virginia Tech’s Jarrod Evans or Tennessee’s Josh Dobbs. — Jordan Raanan"

It certainly makes a lot of sense for the Giants to use a mid-round pick on a quarterback in this year’s draft. While signing Smith is a low-risk, high reward move, he might not be the answer for them long-term.

Having Ben McAdoo as the head coach should help the development of any quarterback that the Giants would draft. Most importantly, the Giants should be focused on using their early-round picks on players that can help them win this season. However, don’t be surprised to see the Giants draft a quarterback in the later rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft.
