New York Giants Select O.J. Howard In NFL Mock Draft 1.0
With the sixth pick in the NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected safety Malik Hooker from Ohio State. Even though quarterback is a need for the Jets still, improving their secondary is one as well.
Coming into the 2017 season, the Jets should attempt to figure out what they have in both Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. While the Jets didn’t invest as much in Petty, the second round pick used on Hackenberg last season means that the Jets have to give him a chance to showcase what he can or cannot do.
While the quarterback situation isn’t good for the Jets, neither is the safety position. Calvin Pryor had an awful season in 2016, and his future with the Jets doesn’t look promising. In addition to Pryor struggling in 2016, Marcus Gilchrist is also recovering from surgery coming into the 2017 season. The Jets have two big question marks at safety, and that isn’t good. The Jets had one of the worst secondaries in the NFL last season, and getting beat deep was an issue.
While the Jets could use a cornerback as well, Marshon Lattimore was taken with by the Titans one pick earlier. With Adams and Lattimore both off the board, Hooker is the relatively easy choice for the Jets. There will certainly be some interest in going quarterback here, but the Jets would be best-suited to take Hooker.
