It is a new era in San Francisco after a poor 2016 season. Now, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan are calling the shots, and one of the biggest needs for them is at the quarterback position. Since Myles Garrett rightfully went first overall to the Cleveland Browns, that leaves North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky on the board.
After the success that Shanahan had in Atlanta with Matt Ryan as his quarterback, he will certainly be attempting to groom himself a new franchise quarterback. The 49ers don’t have much at the position right now, and drafting Trubisky makes a lot of sense here.
Many believe that there isn’t a quarterback worthy of being selected in the Top 5, but Trubisky appears to be the unanimous choice for the first quarterback to be taken overall. Trubisky only really has one full season as a starting quarterback at North Carolina. However, it was an impressive one. In 2016, Trubisky totaled 30 touchdown passes and just six interceptions. With 308 rushing yards in 2016, Trubisky has some good athleticism for a quarterback.
Even though it might be a reach for the 49ers with the second overall pick, Trubisky might develop into a great quarterback with Shanahan as his coach. Passing on some of the talented defensive players was tough, but the 49ers are a quarterback-needy team.
