The New York Yankees avoided the sweep Sunday afternoon, picking up a victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Final. 3. 11. 7. 43

The New York Yankees have struggled in the early going of the 2017 regular season. Multiple injuries have popped up, causing the offense to go cold. The starting rotation has struggled, putting immense pressure on the bullpen. Both things received a boost Sunday afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Yankees were able to avoid a sweep at the hand of the Orioles this afternoon. They eventually took advantage of the opportunities given to them by the Orioles and received a gutsy effort from C.C. Sabathia on the mound.

The Yankees have received the shortest outings from starters thus far this season. Sabathia improved that number today. He gave the Yankees their longest outing of the regular season from a starting pitcher this season.

Sabathia battled through six innings, surrendering six hits and four walks and giving up three runs, two earned. He also struck out three Orioles. Sabathia didn’t get the win, but he pitched well enough to keep his team in the game.

The Yankees offense took a while to wake up. They have plenty of opportunities early on, as Wade Miley constantly put players on base with walks. New York could not take advantage, as they went scoreless in five innings against Miley despite him walking seven and allowing one hit.

The Yankees offense finally woke up once Miley was removed from the game. The Yankees were able to get to Tyler Wilson for two runs. Wilson retired the first two batters he faced before allowing singles to Aaron Judge and Austin Romine. Ronald Torreyes, who leads the Yankees with seven RBI, knocked them in with a triple.

Judge would strike again in the eighth inning, knocking his first home run of the season into the bleachers in left field. With the game now tied, the Yankees would blow things open in the ninth inning.

The Yankees would score four runs in the ninth inning, all credited against Darren O’Day. Like Miley, O’Day was hurt by walks; unlike against Miley, the Yankees took advantage this time. Starlin Castro, Judge, and Romine all had RBI in the inning to help get the Yankees the victory.

The bullpen deserves credit as well. They did not allow a run in relief of Sabathia, as Tyler Clippard, Dellin Betances, and Aroldis Chapman combined for three shutout innings, striking out five and not allowing a hit or walk.

Matt Holliday‘s performance should be noted as well. While he didn’t factor into the scoring in the scorecard, he did take five walks. The final walk led to the deciding run, as Jacoby Ellsbury replaced him as a pinch-runner, stole second, and would score on Castro’s single.
