New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right biceps strain.

The injury bug has hit the New York Yankees. The Yankees announced that starting catcher Gary Sanchez will be sidelined and placed on the 10-day disabled list. Sanchez injured his right biceps during a swing against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.

Manager Joe Girardi announced the move late Saturday night. Sanchez was seen grimacing during his at-bat in the fifth inning after fouling off a pitch from Kevin Gausman. The trainers came out to check on Sanchez and he was removed from the game, being replaced by Austin Romine.

Sanchez discussed the injury with ESPN’s Marly Rivera after the game.

"“I felt kind of like a pull when I had that swing when I fouled the ball off. I did not feel it on any other swing — just on that foul off the high fastball,” Sanchez told ESPN’s Marly Rivera. “I felt like I pulled it right there. I tried to swing, and I felt it again, and they took me out of the game.”"

While the Yankees would prefer Sanchez be healthy, they have to be happy that it wasn’t worse. Sanchez said that doctors told him that the injury was a strain, not a tear. They will double check that again Monday or Tuesday, but for now, Sanchez looks to have avoided any serious injury.

With this type of injury, Sanchez could very easily be out longer than 10 days. It is something that Girardi has admitted to being worried about.

"“Yeah, of course you do when you’re talking about the throwing arm. When you see a guy come out of the game and hold it like that, you’re really concerned.”"

With Sanchez sidelined, the Yankees will be calling up Kyle Higashioka to fill the roster spot. Higashioka had a good spring for the Yankees, slashing .296/.406/.630 in 27 at-bats. He hit three doubles and two home runs, knocking in three runs.

Girardi feels bad for Sanchez going down but says this is an opportunity for Romine and Higashioka to take advantage of.

"“It’s an opportunity for other guys to step up. Romine and Higgy are going to have to step up in his absence,” Girardi said. “It’s not what you want to see. The kid’s very talented and has done some really good things in his short career, but the other guys get an opportunity now.”"

Romine and Higashokia will have big shoes to fill both defensively and at the plate. Sanchez had gotten off to a slow start this season, but we have all seen what he is capable of when he dominated last season.

In addition to Sanchez, the Yankees are also without Greg Bird for a few days. Bird is dealing with the effects from fouling a ball off his foot near the end of Spring Training. Bird has struggled in the regular season after a torrid spring, so the Yankees want to give him some time off to try and get healthy.
