The New York Mets picked up a victory over the Atlanta Braves on Opening Day at Citi Field.

The New York Mets have been one of the better teams in MLB on Opening Day. Coming into 2017, the Mets had a 34-21 record on Opening Day, winning four of their last five games. They would add another win to that record on Monday afternoon.

Opening their season at Citi Field, the Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-0. Despite the lopsided score, it was a pitcher’s duel throughout between Noah Syndergaard and Julio Teheran. Both pitchers were on top of their game and showcased why they were starting on Opening Day and the aces of their staff.

Both Syndergaard and Teheran fired six scoreless innings. Teheran allowed only four hits and three walks in his six innings to go with six strikeouts. Syndergaard allowed only five hits, no walks and added seven strikeouts on his afternoon.

Neither player factored into the decision. Syndergaard probably would have factored into the decision has he not been forced from the game. Syndergaard was removed after the sixth inning because of a blister on the middle finger on his right hand.

Manager Terry Collins said that Syndergaard will be fine for his next start on Sunday. There were no plans to remove him from the game until the blister popped up according to Collins.

Syndergaard missed out on his first victory of the season as a result. In the bottom of the seventh is when all of the runs in the game were scored. The game turned on a play at the plate that was overturned.

Asdrubal Cabrera hit a single to centerfield with Wilmer Flores trying to score from second. Ender Inciarte fired a great throw home and Flores was called out. Upon review, it was clear that Flores snuck his foot under the tag from Tyler Flowers, who was inexplicably behind the plate instead of in front.

Had Flowers been in front of the plate Flores would have been out. But, because his positioning was poor, Flores scored and the floodgates opened for the Mets.

They would tack on five more runs in the inning. Curtis Granderson would hit a sac fly, Jay Bruce walked with the bases loaded, which was followed by a bases clearing double from Lucas Duda.

After such a strong performance from Terehan, the Braves bullpen blew the game and the Mets took advantage. The teams will have off Tuesday before getting back on the field Wednesday night. Jacob deGrom will be taking the mound for the Mets against former Mets fan favorite Bartolo Colon.
