Patrik Elias of the New Jersey Devils has decided to hang up the skates and officially retire from the NHL.

Coming into the season, Patrik Elias of the New Jersey Devils still had a desire to play hockey. Despite knee injuries, Elias was hoping that he would have been able to play one more season for the Devils.

Unfortunately, that never happened, as Elias didn’t play for the Devils, or any team this season. Last season, Elias dealt with a knee injury for most of the season. He was only able to play in 16 games, but he did total eight points in those games.

During the offseason, Elias had a procedure done on his knee. The hope for Elias was that he would be able to make it through one more season, but that didn’t happen. Luckily for Elias, his final game last season was a good one to go out on. In a win against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Elias was able to total one goal and two assists in what has become the final game of his career.

Elias retires as one of the best Devils in the history of the franchise. He played his entire career for New Jersey, which started in the 1995-96 season for one game as a 19-year-old.

In his career, Elias totaled 408 goals, 617 assists, and 1,025 points overall. Elias retires as the franchise leader in goals, assists, power-play goals, and points. Along with Martin Brodeur, Elias helped the Devils have one of the best franchises in the entire NHL during the 90s and 2000s.

Now, he will embark on the next part of his life. Even though he likely would have liked to have his career end differently, Elias is one of the greatest Devils of all-time. Expect to see his jersey number retired by the team in the very near future.
