After missing the playoffs for a few seasons in a row, the New York Giants were able to reach the playoffs in 2016. Despite them improving, nothing is guaranteed for 2017.

Overall, it was a very good season for the New York Giants in 2016. With a rookie head coach in Ben McAdoo, the Giants were able to reach the postseason with an 11-5 record. While an 11-5 record would have been good enough to win the division in other places, the Giants were beaten out by the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East.

Coming into the 2017 season, the Giants will be expected to compete for a division title, and certainly make the playoffs. With a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, the Giants should be able to make the playoffs once again.

However, nothing will be given to the Giants in 2017 because of what they accomplished in 2016. The message from McAdoo to his team is to be focused.

"“We’re going to find out a lot about ourselves. There’s only one goal in this game. It’s to put the trophy in the case, the ring on the finger, the banner on the wall, team picture on the team meeting room wall,” McAdoo said Tuesday to James Kratch of NJ.com. “But that’s it. We want to win it. That’s why we’re in it. That’s it. There’s nothing else. That’s why we work the way we work. “Contending isn’t good enough. there’s only one goal, and that’s why we’re here.”"

In the NFL especially, teams and players are judged by what they are doing, not what they have done. As seen every offseason by the release of players that are under-performing, people will quickly forget the success that you may have had.

"“I think it’s important every day in this business. I think you have to prove to yourself every day in this business,” McAdoo said of handling success to Kratch. “If you don’t approach every day like that in this business, you’re not going to last, whether you are a coach or a player.”"

For the Giants, 2017 is going to be an important season for them. Quarterback Eli Manning isn’t getting any younger, and his chances to win a third Super Bowl might be dwindling.

Even though they had success in 2016, they will have to continue to prove themselves in 2017. If the are a focused team, they should be able to compete for a top spot in the NFC.
