New York Mets left fielder Yoenis Cespedes cleared up what his goals for the 2017 season are.

The New York Mets are less than a week away from beginning the regular season. For the first time in a long time, they are the team to watch in New York to make a trip to the World Series. While the New York Yankees are retooling with younger players, the Mets are built to go for it right now.

A player in the middle of that is outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. When the Mets traded for him prior to the trade deadline in 2015 they were hoping to make a postseason push. They had hoped Cespedes’ offensive prowess would help jump start a dormant offense.

Cespedes has done that and more. He has helped push the Mets into legitimate World Series conversation and leads the charge offensively. Cespedes has provided Gold Glove defense in the outfield and is a possible MVP candidate as well.

More from New York Mets

There was some confusion about that topic earlier in Spring Training. When speaking to reporters in early March, people came away with the feeling that Cespedes goal this season was to take home the MVP award. He cleared that up when speaking to reporters on Monday.

"“I want to clear that up because I know that was mentioned from a few interviews,” Cespedes said through an interpreter on Monday. “The MVP thing, that’s obviously a goal, but that’s not really what I go out there in mind with.”“What I go out in mind with is helping the team win,” Cespedes said. “The team comes first. I like to prepare and will continue to prepare as if it [the MVP] is one of my goals. But the team comes first, then [MVP]. If that comes, great. If not, so be it.”“We know we can win a World Series,” he said."

Cespedes has settled into the superstar role with the Mets. New York was the fourth team that Cespedes was on in four major league seasons, so he has finally found a home with the Mets. They are happy to have him and hope that he can help lead them to a World Series title.

Cespedes said that signing a long-term deal with the Mets helped put him at ease, as it was one less thing to worry about. If that equals more production on the field, the Mets could be looking at an MVP-caliber season and another deep trip into the postseason in 2017.
