New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino’s spring worsened in his last appearance against the Houston Astros.

The New York Yankees have had a lot to be excited about thus far in Spring Training. They have gotten a look at some of their young players, and are getting good performances from unexpected players. But, not everything is positive in Yankees camp.

One player, the Yankees have to be disappointed in is starting pitcher Luis Severino. The Yankees had hoped that Severino would lock down a starting rotation spot this spring. Beyond Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, and C.C. Sabathia, things were wide open. Despite his struggles in 2016, the team saw just how talented he can be during his rookie season in 2015.

Despite his struggles in 2016, the team saw just how talented he can be during his rookie season in 2015. The Yankees were hoping that he would show some of promise from 2015 again, but that has not been the case.

Severino has struggled during Spring Training thus far. Those struggles continued on Sunday against the Houston Astros. Severino was the third pitcher to come into the game for the Yankees and promptly blew the lead.

More from New York Yankees

Severino pitched 3.1 innings and struggled throughout. He gave up three runs, surrendering six hits and two walks. He did strikeout two batters, but the overall performance was not an encouraging one for the former top prospect.

The poor performance puts Severino’s Spring Training ERA at 5.06. He also has a WHIP of 1.59 in only 10.2 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts. What is discouraging for the Yankees is that Severino has worsened as the spring has gone on, putting his chances of locking down a starting rotation spot in jeopardy.

Bryan Mitchell has had a strong spring and should have the inside track to a starting spot. With only one spot likely remaining, Severino has to perform well in his last appearance or he could miss out on a rotation spot. The Yankees want Severino to have a starting spot, but he is not doing anything to earn it.

One player to keep an eye on as well is Adam Warren. Warren started the game against the Astros and did well. The Yankees like the versatility that Warren brings, but he may be destined for a rotation spot if he continues pitching well. Against the Astros he threw 3.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk to go with one strikeout.
