New York Jets: DeShone Kizer Believes He Can Start in Week 1
By Nick Ziegler
The New York Jets are one of the teams entering the NFL Draft with a need at the quarterback position. Did a prospect at the NFL Combine impress them in interviews?
Coming into the offseason, the New York Jets still have a need at the quarterback position. With Bryce Petty and Christain Hackenberg on the roster, the Jets will need to add a quarterback for the 2017 season. The real question is what caliber of quarterback the Jets will try and add.
As always, the quarterbacks have gotten a lot of attention in the NFL Draft. Headlining this year’s class is Mitch Trubisky and Deshaun Watson. However, with a few teams ahead of the Jets with a need at the quarterback position as well, they both might be gone.
After those two, the wild card prospect is DeShone Kizer of Notre Dame. As just a two-year starter at Notre Dame, Kizer doesn’t have a ton of experience. However, he believes that he will be ready to start in Week 1.
"“Absolutely,” he said to Darryl Slater of NJ.com. “I think the experiences I had at Notre Dame have made me battle ready, and have put me in the position to have the confidence to go out in any situation and be successful enough to be a Week 1 starter.”"
In his two seasons at Notre Dame, Kizer totaled 47 passing touchdowns, 19 interceptions, and 60.7 completion percentage. With a relatively weak schedule last season, Kizer and Notre Dame didn’t come close to reaching the program’s expectations. Despite being able to return for another season, Kizer has declared for the NFL Draft.

In a recent mock draft by Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report, he has Kizer going in the Top-10. Having Kizer in the early first round puts him right on the radar for the Jets. Depending on how he performs leading up to the draft, he could be an option for the Jets with the sixth overall pick.
