The New York Jets have decided to part ways with cornerback Darrelle Revis after a poor 2016 season.

After a bad 2016 season, the New York Jets have decided to release cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Due to his poor performance on the field and some issues off of it, the decision to release Revis should come as no surprise. All season, Revis struggled against pretty much any wide receiver he covered.

Starting in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, it was clear that Revis was not the same player that he used to be. In his first stint with the Jets, Revis was arguably one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

However, when the Jets signed him after he won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots, he wasn’t the same player. With a big contract, cutting Revis made total sense for the Jets.

There were some discussions during the season about possibly trying to move Revis to safety. Despite struggling at cornerback all season, Revis never played any safety for the Jets in 2016, and he won’t be playing that position in New York in 2017.

For the Jets, moving on from Revis continue their offseason purge of big contracts. The Jets are clearing out a lot of their veterans that have big contracts, as it is clear the Jets are going into a rebuild.

With Revis gone, the Jets will certainly have to address the cornerback situation. While there are some good free agent cornerbacks available this offseason, they are also in a good position in the draft to select an impact player.

Revis’ legacy will now become a confusing one in Jets history. He was without a doubt one of the best defensive players to put on a Jets jersey for multiple years. However, he leaves New York on a very sour note. With legal issues and a poor 2016 season, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Revis.
