The New York Jets have a challenging offseason ahead of them. Here are five free agents that could be a bargain, and help the team in 2017.

The New York Jets have made it clear that the organization is rebuilding the roster. While the Jets have been able to shed cap space, the team looks like they will not be breaking the bank in free agency. With that being said, the Jets will need to get crafty in order to build a competitive roster through the draft and free agency.

Here are five free agent bargains that could help New York in 2017.

John Simon: OLB

The Jets would love an outside edge rusher and the 26-year-old former Texan could be a nice fit in Bowles’ 3-4 scheme.  Simon is at his best standing up on the outside but can put his hand in the dirt as an end if the Jets went to one of their sub packages with four down lineman.

Let’s not forget that General Manager Mike Maccagnan was in the player personnel department when Houston brought in Simon and could use that knowledge to bring in a versatile player for New York. Even in a situational role last season, Simon recorded five sacks and 53 tackles and had a fumble recovery.

While the Jets have a few options at outside linebacker, Simon would give the at the very least a good situational player that could play multiple spots on the defense. With pass rushers likely to break the bank in free agency, the Jets could sign a solid situational rusher at a reasonable price.
