New York Yankees: Predicting 2017 Team Award Winners
By Nick Ziegler
– Cy Young
For the Yankees, the heavy favorite to be their Cy Young should be Masahiro Tanaka. Even though the Yankees were able to re-sign Aroldis Chapman this offseason, Tanaka will likely be more important.
As of now, the Yankees don’t have much talent in their starting rotation. Heading toward Opening Day, Tanaka is by far the best pitcher in the rotation, and the Yankees will be relying heavily on him.
Since signing with the Yankees, Tanaka has been their ace. Even though he has dealt with elbow issues, he has still been able to be an effective pitcher. Also, he has avoided the dreaded Tommy John surgery. Last season was arguably the best for Tanaka. He was able to total a 14-4 record, 3.06 ERA, and he just missed pitching in 200 innings.
For yet another season, Tanaka will be asked to do a lot for the Yankees’ rotation. Unless someone surprisingly steps up, the Yankees will be asking Tanaka to not only pitch well but pitch deep into games every five days.
Due to the rotation being weak, Tanaka should have no problem being the Cy Young of the Yankees. With an opt-out clause after this season, another good season for Tanaka will also land him another hefty contract.
