Ryan Nassib has been the backup quarterback for the New York Giants the past few seasons. Despite this, he isn’t the future at the position.

Quarterback is a revolving door in the NFL. One minute you’re a hero, and the next you’re the first guy on the cut list. New York Giants fourth-year quarterback Ryan Nassib finds himself in the situation where he better start packing his bags.

Nassib was slated as the quarterback of the future, but he has had a question mark written on him since last year’s preseason. Nassib has solid intangibles and had a decent college career, but he is not the future quarterback of the New York Giants.

The truth of the matter is that Nassib doesn’t have what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. It’s taken him four years to develop into a halfway decent backup.

Nassib just exemplifies what a perennial backup quarterback is. It’s easy to liken him to a guy like Jim Sorgi in the sense that he won’t hurt you if he goes in, and he’s just meant to sit in the backseat his entire career.

Nassib doesn’t take up much cap space, but it’s time to let him walk so the team can develop someone else into the next starter.

This quarterback draft class is not very deep, and it is highly unlikely that Big Blue will find its next quarterback in it. The best case scenario for the Giants is waiting for next year’s draft, and to have Josh Johnson backup Eli Manning for the time being.

The Giants are in a bit of a predicament when it comes to the quarterback situation. Manning is on the backend of his career, but the team is on the rise. With the current roster, there is a very low possibility that the Giants will have a top pick to take a quarterback in the coming years.

If the Giants were to hold on to Nassib until Manning’s retirement they would have a similar situation to what the Broncos had this year. The team would be setting itself up to bring in a free agent quarterback to have a competition with the presumed predecessor.

It would just create a situation that the Giants front office won’t want. Every team wants a quarterback that is going to step in a take the reins and seamlessly transition into the team’s system. Nassib has proven that he isn’t capable of being that guy based off of his transition from college to the pros.

The Giants should look ahead to the 2018 NFL Draft. A guy like Matt Linehan from Idaho or Richard Lagow from Indiana would be good fits in the Giants’ scheme. Linehan is coming out of a multiple scheme that is used to running the no huddle offense, and Lagow ran a spread-style offense similar to what the Giants run now.

The best thing the Giants can do is let Nassib walk. If they put all of their eggs into Nassib’s basket, then they will be wasting a team that could be a top competitor in the league. It’s time for Nassib to go back up or hang it up, and it’s time for the Giants to find the next man under center for when Manning retires.
