The New York Giants have released wide receiver Victor Cruz, as the two sides will be parting ways after plenty of memories.

Every child that loves football grows up wanting to be their favorite NFL player. Every time they played backyard football, they wore his jersey. Every time they watched him make a highlight reel play, they envisioned themselves doing it. They would even perfect every touchdown dance that player ever did down to the last step.

For Giants fans of the last ten years; that was Victor Cruz.

Cruz’s release is something that Giants fans have seen coming for some time now. With two injury ridden seasons, and a subpar season this year, it seemed that Cruz was on his way out before the offseason even started.

His recent release has opened up conversations across the league about where he is going to go, and who the Giants will replace him with, but let’s hold on for one second.

Giants fans everywhere; take the time to thank Victor Cruz what he did as a part of the Giants organization.

It would be easy to just detail Cruz’s statistics, and say that he is one of the best Giants receivers ever, but that wouldn’t do him justice.  It’s time to thank Cruz for what he really did, and that’s making all of us believe.

Cruz did it better than any Hollywood writer could’ve scripted it. A small-town guy, playing for a small division one college, and ends up playing for the NFL team that he grew up watching. He burst onto the scene and dazzled fans immediately. His speed was blinding, his hands were exceptional, and most of all his heart was untouchable.

After he took a flat route 74 yards for a touchdown, and then did his famous salsa routine, everybody watching the game turned to the person they were sitting next to and said, “Who the hell is that?”

That was the last time anyone ever asked that question. Cruz became a household name not only in New York, but across the nation as well. He was one of the top receivers in the league in 2011, and it all culminated on the NFL’s biggest stage.

He scored a touchdown to help lead the Giants to the team’s second Super Bowl win in five years. His gritty performances have been some of the most amazing things that fans have had a chance to watch. His peak might have only been a flash in the pan, but it was amazing to watch every snap he played while wearing blue.

In short, thank you Victor. Thank you for making kids everywhere believe that dreams can become reality, but most of all, thank you for never giving up on us.

Giants fans, appreciate greatness while you have it, because you never know when it will go away. Victor Cruz taught us to believe that in New York, in the words of Frank Sinatra, “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere.”

Cruz solidified New York as the city of dreamers, and for that, we owe him a debt of gratitude. Victor, wherever you may go after this, just know that there is a standing ovation waiting for you in the Meadowlands when you come back.
