The New York Giants have continued their busy day, as they have reportedly released running back Rashad Jennings.

In addition to releasing wide receiver Victor Cruz, the New York Giants have also released running back Rashad Jennings according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com.

Like the release of Cruz, this shouldn’t come as too much of a shock to anyone either. Even though Jennings wasn’t scheduled to make a lot of money next season, this is more of a move to clear the way for Paul Perkins.

By releasing Jennings, the Giants will save $2.5 million next season. However, they will also be giving the reigns to Perkins to be their featured back it appears next season.

Last season, the Giants really struggled to run the football. While their offensive line had issues, Jenning also didn’t run it very effectively. In 2016, Jennings totaled 181 carries, 593 rushing yards, and three rushing touchdowns. The 3.3 yards per carry for Jennings was pretty awful, and it was clear that he shouldn’t be a starting running back anymore.

After a pretty solid season in 2015 for the Giants, the 2016 season was certainly a let down for Jennings. Now, he will be looking for another team to play for next season. As a veteran running, Jennings might find it hard to find a new team next season after the poor 2016 season.

For the Giants, it is all about moving forward with Perkins now. As a rookie, Perkins totaled 456 rushing yards, as he really came on toward the end of the season. In the final three games of the season, Perkins ran for 56, 68, and 102 rushing yards. Having a more balanced attack on offense will be important for the Giants next season.  Their inability to run the football resulted in them being far too predictable at times on offense.

While the move does save the Giants some money, it is more of an indication that this is Perkins’ job to lose now.
