Victor Cruz

Cruz has become a fan favorite with the Giants. His underdog story is one fans love, as he went undrafted out of Massachusetts and became a to-go receiver with the Giants. But, as they say, all good things must come to an end; this offseason will more than likely be the end of Cruz with the Giants.

Cruz restructured his contract last season to remain with the Giants and would like to do that again. But, the Giants would be better off cutting bait now and saving all of the money that Cruz could make.

Cruz has the fifth highest cap hit on the Giants for 2017 at $9.4 million. His base salary is $7.5 million, and the Giants can save all of that base salary by releasing him. Anyone reading this has a better chance of making the Giants as a walk-on player this summer than Cruz has of making that much money. His comeback was a nice story, but his production doesn’t come close to matching that price tag.

The Giants have their new slot receiver in 2015 second round pick Sterling Shepard. Cruz faded as the season went on and the Giants can find an upgrade on the outside over him. Fans may be upset to see Cruz leave, but the Giants can gain more by releasing him than keeping him.
