Recent New York Yankees rumors have been about the team being willing to trade Starlin Castro if the right offer came along.

This offseason, there were plenty of Yankees rumors surrounding both Brett Gardner and Chase Headley. As both are making decent money, the Yankees were interested in trading them this offseason.

With both still being on the team, that obviously didn’t happen. However, it was a bit surprising to see that the Yankees were also listening to offers on Starlin Castro. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees were also willing to part ways with the starting second baseman if the right deal came along.

In his first season with the Yankees, Castro played pretty well. He totaled a .270 batting average, 21 home runs, and 70 RBIs. His position switch from shortstop to second base also went better than expected. The combination of Castro and Didi Gregorius in the middle of the Yankees’ infield was certainly a bright spot.

After the pretty good season, it is a bit surprising to see that the Yankees were willing to deal Castro. The Yankees do have a lot of talented young infielders in their farm system. However, it’s hard to imagine that any of them would be ready to make an impact in 2017.

If Castro was dealt, it would likely be Rob Refsynder who would have been the starting second baseman. While Refsnyder has been a decent player for the Yankees, he certainly isn’t as good as Castro at this point.

Even though Castro played well, making him available this offseason leads one to believe that he isn’t in the long-term plans for the Yankees. At just 26-years-old, Castro should have some value after a good season in 2016. If one of the Yankees young infielders is ready come the second half of the season, the Yankees might once again consider moving Castro is the price is right.
