Yankees Rumors: Strong Push Made for Sergio Romo
By Nick Ziegler
Recent New York Yankees rumors are very interesting, as they reportedly made a push to sign relief pitcher Sergio Romo.
Despite having a strong bullpen already, recently Yankees rumors have been about the team making a push to sign relief pitcher Sergio Romo. According to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, the Yankees made a push to sign Romo.
While Romo is expected to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers according to Sanchez, it is very interesting to see the Yankees have an interest in him.
Going into 2017, the Yankees have a very strong backend of their bullpen. Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances are one of the best duos in baseball, and the Yankees will hope to get them the ball with the lead often this season.
While they are great, the Yankees do have some question marks in the rest of their bullpen. As of now, it appears that Tyler Clippard will be the seventh inning man. The interest in Romo was likely for him to compete with Clippard for that position in the bullpen.
Romo certainly would have been an upgrade for the Yankees’ bullpen. Last season with the San Francisco Giants, Romo totaled a 2.64 ERA in 40 games. For his career, Romo has totaled a 2.58 ERA and has averaged slightly more than a strikeout per inning as a relief pitcher.
Clippard did pitch well for the Yankees in the second half of the season last year. However, he did struggle with the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to joining the Yankees. This could be Brian Cashman trying to add some talent before spring training in case Clippard regresses from his 2016 form with the Yankees.

There are still some veteran relief pitchers that are on the market. It will be interesting to monitor the Yankees’ aggressiveness when it comes to adding another arm for their bullpen.
