Analysis:
At the time, JPP was drafted by the Giants based on his raw ability and athleticism. He has turned out to be one of the best players Reese has drafted, and played a huge role in restoring the pass rush to its dominant tradition. Joseph was also a good presence on the defensive line, and was a good run stopper.
Even though Reese hit the mark with the selection of JPP, he missed out on a whole bunch of superstars in the later rounds. As is typical with Reese’s drafts, the mid-to-low round selections do not pan out and we never hear from them following draft day. After selecting JPP, the Giants passed on Bowman, Atkins, Graham, Chancellor and Brown multiple times.
Brown turned out to be the best player in this loaded draft, and wasn’t picked until the 6th round. The other aforementioned players are also among the best at their positions, and when compared to Reese’s post-2nd-round picks, it does not look good.
However, all hope was not lost during the offseason of 2010. Reese and the Giants struck gold with the signings of Cruz and Rolle. Cruz was not heard of before his preseason success, but he quickly burst onto the scene and became a fan favorite. Rolle joined the team and immediately became a leader of the Giants defense, earning his respect among teammates and fans. Both players were impactful additions and gave 100% effort throughout their entire careers as Giants.
Even though the Giants missed out on many studs late in the draft, the signings of Rolle and Cruz, along with the addition of JPP, ultimately makes up for it. Reese gets a pass here, whether it be due to luck or not.
