Despite not being able to acquire a member of their big three, trading Carmelo Anthony to the Clippers could prove to be a blessing for the New York Knicks.

The New York Knicks have been at the forefront of the NBA rumor mill this week by dangling franchise forward Carmelo Anthony in trade talks.

Reports have stated that the Knicks offered the All-Star forward to the Cleveland Cavaliers for big man Kevin Love; however, the Cavaliers rebuffed their proposal. As a result, the Knicks have been shopping Anthony to two other teams – the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers.

The Boston Celtics are a team who has been long linked to Anthony due to their excess of trade assets; however, it’s been said that they’re not overly interested in a deal for the forward. That makes the Clippers the most likely suitor for Anthony.

Clippers Are Interested In Anthony

The Clippers are said to have interest in Anthony, but are unwilling to deal one of their big three (Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, Blake Griffin) for him. Out of those three, Griffin likely would’ve been the player the Knicks had set their sights on, but due to the collective bargaining agreement the Knicks wouldn’t have been able to acquire him anyway.

Due to the collective bargaining agreement, the Knicks wouldn’t have been able to have Griffin’s max deal and Derrick Rose’s max deal on their roster simultaneously. The Knicks seem to have interest in other members of the Clippers roster though.

While they’re unable to acquire any of the Clipper big three, the Knicks are still interested in acquiring point guard Austin Rivers, former Knick Jamal Crawford and shooting guard J.J. Reddick.

Rivers is under contract for roughly $12 million this year and the following two seasons. Crawford is under contract for at least one more year at approximately $14 million a year, and Reddick is on an expiring deal worth about $7 million a year. If the Knicks were to make a deal to accommodate both of their salary caps, here is a deal they could pull off.

Here’s why the Knicks should consider doing this deal.
