Carmelo Anthony was not voted into the 2017 NBA All-Star game, snapping his seven-year streak.

Carmelo Anthony has been a stalwart in the NBA All-Star game. He has been named to the team nine out of the 10 years that he has been in the NBA, including seven consecutive. The last eight times that he has been named to the team it has been a starter. Both of those streaks will come to an end this season.

Barring Anthony being named an injury replacement, he will not be partaking in the 2017 NBA All-Star game in New Orleans. Anthony was not selected by the fans, coaches, and players to be a starter for the Eastern Conference; Kyrie Irving, DeMar DeRozan, LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jimmy Butler will be starting.

The All-Star reserves were named Thursday, and Anthony was not on that list either. Coaches were responsible for naming the reserves and decided to go with four guards and three frontcourt players. Coaches cannot vote for players on their own team for the reserves.

Kemba Walker, Isaiah Thomas, John Wall, and Kyle Lowry were the backcourt players; Kevin Love, Paul George, and Paul Millsap were the frontcourt players selected.

Earlier in the week, Anthony said that he had hoped to make the All-Star team. But, if he was not selected, he would welcome the rest that would come with not having to play. While he is not playing in the game, there is a chance he will still be there because he is a representative of the NBA Players Association Executive Board.

Part of Anthony’s exclusion from the event could be the play of the New York Knicks. They have lost 14 of their last 18 games and continue tumbling down the standings. Anthony has also been a part of trade rumors recently as Phil Jackson is reportedly determined to trade him away.

Anthony has done his part on the court scoring at a torrid pace recently. Anthony is averaging 30.3 points in his last four games. That is a strong number, but it has not resulted in Knicks wins; they have lost three of the four games.

Not getting voted into the game could be a blessing in disguise for Anthony. He has been dealing with a shoulder injury that will only get better with rest. Anthony has only missed one game because of the injury, so maybe it is best that he isn’t playing. The Knicks have eight days between games because of the All-Star break; a period of rest Anthony could definitely use.
