Number Eight: Erik Howard

Howard was around for two Giants Super Bowls, and in his time he merited one Pro Bowl appearance in 1990. He was a force for the Giants on some of the best defensive teams the G-Men have ever had.

Howard is enshrined in Giants folklore because of the play he made in the 1990 NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. With two minutes left in the game, it looked like Joe Montana was on his way to another Super Bowl when Howard would make a career-defining play.

Howard got into the backfield and dislodged the ball from Roger Craig. Lawrence Taylor picked up the fumble, setting up a game-winning Matt Bahr field goal.  The kick sent the Giants to the Super Bowl, and Howard’s play made him a Giants hero.
