New York Islanders Impress with Doug Weight as Head Coach
By Nick Ziegler
The New York Islanders were able to respond positively on the ice after the firing of their head coach Jack Capuano.
In the first game since the firing of head coach Jack Capuano, the New York Islanders played one of their best games of the season against the Dallas Stars. The Stars are not having the season that they would have hoped this season, but they still have a dangerous offense. On Thursday, the Islanders completely shut them down.
It was a really impressive showing for the Islanders on Thursday. With Doug Weight now as the head coach, many expected the Islanders to play hard for their new coach. As a former player, Weight is well-respected in the locker room, and it showed on Thursday.
Islanders captain John Tavares led by example on Thursday. He was able to set the tone with a goal in the first period, and the Islanders never looked back. In addition to scoring in the first period, Tavares would add a short-handed goal in the third period to ice the game.
As a former teammate of Weight, Tavares performed extremely well for his new head coach in the win. In addition to the two goals from Tavares, Thomas Greiss was also outstanding in the net. Greiss turned back all 23 shots that he faced, and he was able to shut out a talented Stars offense.
The win was very impressive due to the fact that the Islanders were without Johnny Boychuk, Andrew Ladd, and Cal Clutterbuck. Being without three normal starters is certainly a challenging thing to overcome.

It was good to see the Islanders respond in a positive way to Weight. With a lot of time left in the season, the Islanders will now try to build on this win. The shutout against the Stars was also the second straight game that the Islanders didn’t allow a goal to be scored against them. Now, we will have to wait and see how the Islanders perform under Weight for the next few weeks.
