Coaching Staff Grade: C

Ben McAdoo’s first playoff appearance as a head coach did not go as planned. The Giants looked unprepared at times, and their undisciplined play was uninspiring, to say the least. Some of that blame needs to fall on the coaching staff, but not all of it.

The Giants game plan offensively was good, on paper. They were moving the ball with some success in the early part of the game as Manning had the offense in rhythm. But, costly drops killed the Giants momentum, stalling drives and resulting in field goals. Once again the running game was abandoned rather early, as the Giants ended up with only 17 rushes compared to 44 pass attempts.

The defense was succeeding early in the game as well. They looked dominant up until the final two Packers drives of the first half. After they allowed the first touchdown, they seemed to be a little defeated. They came out strong to open the second half, getting stops the first two drives, but allowed a score on the Packers final four drives of the game.

Special teama were a huge problem. The Packers constantly started with great field position, while the Giants were pinned back too often. They were by far the worst unit against the Packers, because unlike the offense and defense, the special teams were never on track.

Overall the Giants were unable to make the necessary adjustments that the Packers were able to make. But, at the end of the day, there is only so much the coaching staff can do. While they got out coached at points, it is much easier to work with a multiple score lead, something the Giants would have had should the offense had not let down Manning so often early in the game.
