Yankees Rumors: Interest Expressed In Sergio Romo
New York Yankees Rumors: With Aroldis Chapman back in the fold, the Yankees are looking to round out the remainder of their bullpen and have checked in on Sergio Romo.
New York Yankees rumors continue to pop up as they look to fill out the rest of their roster. The Yankees have been mentioned as a potentially active team this winter. They have some tradeable assets and money to spend in free agency.
They have already spent a large chunk of that money. They added Matt Holliday to help out at designated hitter to replace Brian McCann, who was traded to the Houston Astros. The Yankees landed their big ticket item in Aroldis Chapman to be their closer with a monster five-year, $86 million deal.

The bullpen was an area of need heading into the offseason for the Yankees. After trading Chapman and Andrew Miller prior the MLB Trade Deadline, the Yankees were void of talent in their bullpen. Outside of Dellin Betances and Tyler Clippard, the rest of the bullpen was arguably wide open.
Because of that, the Yankees still have more work to do within their bullpen. They have already been linked to veteran lefty Boone Logan, who had some of the best years of his career with the organization from 2010-2013.
The Yankees have now been linked to yet another reliever that could help make a bridge to Chapman at the end of games. According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Yankees are one of a number of teams to express interest in Sergio Romo.
Romo, formally of the San Francisco Giants, would be a solid addition to the Yankees bullpen. He has experience in late-inning roles, as he was the closer for the Giants previously and has 84 career saves. He knows how to pitch under pressure, winning three titles with the Giants so the bright lights of New York should not phase him.
Romo has a career 3.09 ERA in the postseason and 2.58 in the regular season. He averages over a strikeout an inning with a 10.2 K/9 during the regular season and 0.96 WHIP. Romo also made the All-Star team in 2013, when he recorded a career-high 38 saves.
The only thing working against Romo is his age. He will be 34 years old once the regular season begins, and battled a right flexor strain in his elbow. That is the same injury that Carson Smith of the Red Sox had, and he eventually underwent Tommy John surgery.
Romo was able to avoid Tommy John surgery, as he returned in July after missing about two and a half months of action. He made it through the remainder of the season without issue, but it is something to keep an eye on.

Given that risk, and his age, Romo probably won’t cost too much. The number of teams involved could drive up the price, but given his past performance, Romo would make for a good addition to the Yankees bullpen. He, along with Chapman, Betances, and Clippard would give the Yankees four relievers with closing experience and plenty of fire power at the end of games.
