The New York Mets plan to expand the versatility of top prospect Amed Rosario for the 2017 season.

The New York Mets have a couple of infield prospects they are very excited about. Arguably the most talented youngster in their farm system is Amed Rosario.

Rosario is the Mets No.1 overall prospect. He was signed in 2013 out of the Dominican Republic and has worked his way up the Mets farm system since. He is one of the top prospects in all of baseball, ranking No.11 in MLB’s Top 100 Prospects list.

The Mets have another shortstop near the top of their prospects list as well. Gavin Cecchini is No.3 overall, with first baseman Dominic Smith sandwiched in between. The Mets have a good problem with top prospects at a premium position, but getting them on the field at the same time may be difficult.

The Mets want to improve their major league team for 2017 and are looking at Rosario as an option. But, they have solid options already at the major league level. Asdrubal Cabrera and Neil Walker are still penciled in at shortstop and second base, so there is not a clear path to playing time for Rosario.

That is why the Mets plan to move Rosario around. He is a shortstop by trade, but expect them to try him out all over the field. Steve Gelbs says, from a conversation with Sandy Alderson, that the Mets will introduce Rosario to new positions this season, namely third base.

Some people may question why you would move a top prospect, but look no further than this season’s World Series Champions, the Chicago Cubs. They are loaded with young talent that has a ton of versatility. MVP Kris Bryant can play third base and the outfield. Javier Baez plays all over the infield. Adding versatility will not only help Rosario get on the field but give Terry Collins options.

The Mets need more insurance at third base. David Wright has not prove he can stay healthy and is a huge question mark. Having Rosario learn that position gives them another option for the hot corner to turn to.

Rosario is very athletic and has an approach that plays well at the major league level. He has all the tools to remain at shortstop long term but can certainly help the Mets in the short term at third base.

The Mets need to get creative when filling out their bench. It has been a weak spot at times for them in recent seasons, but Rosario could help change that. If he is added to the mix, the Mets could have a solid bench along with Wilmer Flores, Jose Reyes, and Juan Lagares.
