New York Knicks Takeaways vs Portland Trail Blazers
Point Guard Play
For what feels like forever the Knicks would go into games at a severe disadvantage at the point guard position. They would get no production from the spot on either end of the court and struggle to keep up with opposing point guards. That is no longer a problem as Derrick Rose and Brandon Jennings make for a dynamic duo.
Rose looks to have his explosion back. He can get to the basket still with ease and explode towards the basket. He is still working out some kinks but it is encouraging to see him get to the basket. Tonight he scored 18 points with five assists, the first time this season he scored 15 or more points and the Knicks won.
Off the bench, Jennings has been giving a clinic in how to be a playmaker and distribute. Tonight he handed out 11 assists, the third time already this season that he reached double-digit assists off the bench. Since 2003, only two Knicks have managed that feat and Jennings has already accomplished it multiple times. He thrives off the energy of the crowd and genuinely enjoys playing basketball in a Knicks uniform.
Point guard play had been a huge negative for the Knicks but the additions of Rose and Jennings bring a lot to the table. Hornacek said before the season that he didn’t plan on playing them much together, but they have proven to be a good tandem in the Knicks small ball lineups.
